Staff Spotlight: Jennifer Nelson

I am building connections with students and the local community to bring those two stakeholders together for the benefit of our school community. I am so excited to take advantage of the resources the Academy at Elkin has to offer! 

Jennifer Nelson, originally from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, earned a B.S. in elementary education and an M.A. in educational media–instructional technology from Appalachian State University in 2013 and 2018 respectively.  She currently serves as a second-grade teacher at the Academy at Elkin. Why did you choose to work at the Academy at Elkin?
I chose to work at the Academy at Elkin because I wanted to be a part of this new school with innovative practices and positive culture.   

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy at Elkin?
My favorite part is my coworkers! I get to work with the best educators around and learn from their knowledge and experience. 

How are you impacting education in your community?

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Math

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy at Elkin. What does "learning together" mean to you? 
To me, “learning together” means learning from and with other educators.    

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy at Elkin. 
We have had the opportunity to collaborate with the educators in our building as well as those from our sister school, the App State Academy at Middle Fork, and I have learned so much from our discussions and professional development.
