Staff Spotlight: Abby Walker

I feel it’s important to encourage our students to always wonder, never grow complacent, and find true joy and pride in their successes.

Abby Walker, originally from Elkin, North Carolina, serves as a fourth grade teaching assistant at the Academy at Elkin. Walker is planning to pursue a B.S. in elementary education from Appalachian State University. Read on to learn more:

Why did you choose to work at the Academy at Elkin?

I feel it’s important to encourage our students to always wonder, never grow complacent, and find true joy and pride in their successes. This is what I get to do at the Academy at Elkin. Furthermore, this positive encouragement has the power to change lives and communities. 

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy at Elkin?

My favorite part of working at the Academy at Elkin is greeting all of our students in the morning and genuinely letting them know how happy I am to see them. 

How are you impacting education in your community?

I am helping our fourth grade teachers lead, guide, direct, and support our students, and I am joining my colleagues in celebrating any and all progress and success.

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?

Science

The Academy at Elkin has a reading literacy focus. What is your favorite book?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy at Elkin. What does "learning together" mean to you? 

Learning together is when we as a class, or as coworkers, share our insights, perspectives, and experiences and are able to have an "aha" moment and grasp something formerly not known.
