I am so excited to be a part of the ground-breaking work we will be doing at the Academy at Elkin. Our mini-Mountaineers deserve the best and I know everyone will be working tirelessly to make sure that our school is the absolute, most exciting place to be every day!

I love that the Academy at Elkin is a part of Appalachian State University. App State’s Reich College of Education brings their top-notch wealth of expertise to our faculty, staff and students.

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy at Elkin?
It is wonderful to work alongside staff members who all share a common vision and mission. Every member of the team brings special gifts and strengths and knows that every decision we make and activity we do is for our students. It is exciting to develop a model of innovation and success which will be a guide for other schools in our state and nation.

How are you impacting education in your community?
I am leading teachers in designing and implementing innovative, authentic and engaging lessons. I hope to connect our students with the community and the world beyond the walls of our school. I am supporting faculty and staff in providing our students with joyous and successful learning experiences.

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy at Elkin. What does "learning together" mean to you?
At the Academy at Elkin, we [the staff] understand that learning together is a constructive activity and is more meaningful when there are real connections made in the learning process.

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy at Elkin.
During our first week together at the beginning of August, the school’s faculty and our exploration-based learning partner, RootEd, walked the trails of Elkin. As we walked, we learned about one another and discussed ways to bring various learning experiences from the local trails to our individual classroom spaces. We came up with so many great ideas to incorporate into lessons and possible projects for kids and adults!
